Almost Heaven Salem 2-Person Barrel Sauna: The $4,770 Entry Point

The Well Vetted Editorial Team · Editorial Team

The Almost Heaven Salem is the cheapest way to get a real barrel sauna with a real heater. $4,770. Heater, rocks, light, hardware, all included. No separate heater purchase that adds $600-1,500 like you see with Dundalk or SaunaLife. Here is what you get, what you give up, and whether the trade-offs are worth it at this price.

Quick Answer

Is the Almost Heaven Salem worth $4,770?

Yes. It is the most affordable barrel sauna that includes a heater and rocks, backed by a limited lifetime warranty on the structure. 6x4 ft, 2-person, 6 kW heater, 190°F+, ball-and-socket construction, made in the USA. The catch: it is snug for two large adults, requires 240V, and needs a foundation. Total installed cost is realistically $5,200-5,800.

  • Price: $4,770 with 6 kW heater and rocks included
  • Capacity: 2 persons (snug), solo sessions are ideal
  • Heat: 180-200°F traditional, dry or wet with steam
  • Total installed cost: $5,200-5,800 with electrical and foundation
  • Warranty: limited lifetime on structure, 5 years on heater

What $4,770 includes

A 6x4 ft barrel sauna in rustic fir (cedar upgrade available). 6 kW electric heater with sauna rocks. Tempered glass door. Stainless steel band clamps. LED interior light. Two opposing benches. Everything you need except the 240V circuit and a level surface to put it on.

The ball-and-socket lumber joints lock the staves together without glue. This construction method allows the wood to expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking or separating. It is the same joint system used in the $5,715 Pinnacle. Same engineering, smaller footprint.

Limited lifetime warranty on the structure. 5-year warranty on the heater. 1-year on heating elements. Made in Renick, West Virginia.

The heat

The 6 kW heater reaches 180-200°F in 45-60 minutes. It runs dry (traditional Finnish style) or wet (pour water on the rocks for steam). The heat quality is identical to the Pinnacle because the heater is the same unit. The smaller interior volume of the Salem (6x4 vs 6x6) actually means it heats faster. Less air to warm.

For someone coming from infrared blankets or infrared cabins, the difference is stark. Infrared operates at 130-150°F with direct tissue heating. The Salem hits 190°F+ with ambient heat that envelops your entire body, head included. It is the experience people picture when they say "sauna."

The size question

6x4 feet. Two opposing benches. Two adults fit. If both are over 6 feet or over 200 lbs, it is snug. Your knees will be close. Shoulders may overlap the bench edge.

For solo sessions, the Salem is actually better than the Pinnacle. Less air volume means faster heat-up and less energy waste. You sit in the middle, lean against the curved wall (get a backrest, $112), and have the whole barrel to yourself.

For regular couples use or any social scenario, spend the extra $945 on the Pinnacle ($5,715). The 6x6 footprint transforms the experience from "we fit" to "this is comfortable." If there is any chance you will want more room, buy the Pinnacle and never think about it again.

Installation and total cost

The sauna ships in crates, roughly 300-400 lbs total. Curbside delivery on a pallet. You move it from there. Assembly takes 2-3 people and 4-6 hours. A cordless drill and the included hardware.

Total installed cost:

Sauna: $4,770
240V/30A circuit (electrician): $200-500
Foundation (gravel pad, pavers, or concrete): $150-500
Backrest (recommended): $112
Accessory set (bucket, ladle, thermometer): $331

Realistic range: $5,200-5,800 for a ready-to-use barrel sauna with accessories. At the high end of that range, you are still $1,500+ under a Dundalk Serenity ($5,724) that ships without the heater.

Pay with HSA/FSA through TrueMed at Select Saunas checkout and the $4,770 purchase drops to $2,862-3,578 in real spending power depending on your tax bracket.

The tradeoffs

Fir, not cedar. The standard Salem uses rustic fir. It looks great when new and smells wonderful when heated. In wet climates (Pacific Northwest, Southeast, Gulf Coast), fir needs annual sealing and more attention than cedar. In dry climates (Mountain West, Southwest), fir performs fine with basic maintenance. Cedar upgrade is available at a premium.

No porch. You exit directly into your yard. No covered cool-down spot at the door. If this matters to you, the Dundalk Serenity ($5,724 + heater) has a built-in porch. Or add outdoor furniture near the door.

2-person maximum. This is a firm limit, not a suggestion. The barrel is 4 feet deep. Two benches, two seats. For any social use beyond a single guest, you need the Pinnacle.

240V required. No workaround. No 120V option. If you cannot run a 240V circuit to your backyard, this sauna does not work for you. Consider the OUTEXER infrared cabin ($1,000) which runs on standard 120V.

Buy it or skip it

Buy the Salem if: You want the cheapest possible barrel sauna with a real heater included. You sauna primarily solo or with one partner. You have outdoor space and can run 240V. You live in a dry climate or are willing to maintain fir wood annually.

Skip it for the Pinnacle ($5,715) if: You ever sauna with more than one other person. The $945 difference buys 50% more interior space and eliminates the "is this big enough" question permanently.

Skip it entirely if: You rent, lack outdoor space, or cannot install 240V. In those cases, the LifePro RejuvaWrap blanket ($400) or OUTEXER infrared cabin ($1,000) are the right products for your situation.
