What is a portable tent sauna?
A portable tent sauna is a collapsible fabric enclosure with built-in infrared heating panels. You sit inside on a chair with your head sticking out the top. The infrared panels heat the enclosed space to around 140°F while you sweat for 20-40 minutes. When you're done, the whole thing folds flat and fits in a closet.
They're not as intense as sauna blankets or infrared cabins, but they're the most affordable way to experience infrared sauna therapy at home. Think of them as the entry-level tier in our sauna picks.
SereneLife Infrared Home Sauna ($194)
The SereneLife is the most popular portable sauna on Amazon, with 5,200+ reviews and a 4.3 star average. It's been around longer than most competitors and has a proven track record.
It heats to 140°F using far infrared panels, includes a foldable chair, and has zippered hand slots so you can read or use your phone. A wired remote controls temperature and a 60-minute timer. Setup takes about 5 minutes the first time, 2 minutes after that. When folded, it's about the size of a large suitcase.
The build quality is decent for the price: multi-layer insulation keeps heat in, and the frame is sturdy enough for daily use. The fabric isn't machine-washable, so you'll need to wipe it down after sweaty sessions.
Smartmak Far Infrared Sauna Tent ($170)
The Smartmak is $24 cheaper and has a few small advantages. The cotton exterior is machine-washable, a genuine convenience for something you're sweating heavily in. It comes with a foot heating pad that the SereneLife doesn't include, and the cotton fabric feels more comfortable against skin than PVC.
It reaches the same 140°F, includes a chair and remote, and has zippered arm pockets. At 14 lbs (vs. the SereneLife's 18 lbs), it's slightly more portable. The 890 reviews with a 4.2 average are solid, just not as extensive as the SereneLife's track record.
The tradeoff: cotton insulates less than multi-layer PVC. In a cold room, you'll notice slightly less heat retention. The brand is also less established, and if warranty claims matter to you, the SereneLife is the safer bet.
Should you spend more on a blanket instead?
Honest question worth addressing. A LifePro RejuvaWrap sauna blanket costs $400, which is double the price but a fundamentally different (and arguably better) experience. Blankets wrap heat directly around your body for more efficient heating, and they hit temperatures up to 176°F.
If your budget is truly hard-capped at $200, the SereneLife or Smartmak are great starting points. If you can stretch to $400 and want better results, the LifePro blanket is the smarter long-term investment. See our full blanket vs sauna comparison for the detailed breakdown.
The verdict
Buy the SereneLife ($194) for the safest bet. Its 5,200+ reviews don't lie, and the extra $24 buys peace of mind and proven durability.
Buy the Smartmak ($170) if you prioritize washability, want the foot heating pad, or just want the absolute cheapest entry into home sauna therapy.
Either way, you're getting legitimate infrared heat for under $200. That's a gym sauna membership for 3 months, except you own it forever. Not sure which sauna type is right for you? Our 2-minute quiz can help.
